Healthy Eating with a Busy Schedule

Meal Prep Ideas for Healthy Eating

The time it takes to cook a healthy meal often prevents people from making smart food choices. Vegetables need to be chopped, diced, and sliced in order to be placed in recipes. But what if there were a way you could prepare enough food to give some healthy meals for a week, while only spending a few hours in the kitchen?

This is possible when you plan ahead. All it takes is deciding on the recipes for the week in advance and then preparing your foods ahead of schedule. Many vegetables can be cut up and then placed in individual mason jars and sealed. They will last a few days in the fridge and you can use them in your recipes and cut down on the time it takes to cook.

A healthy breakfast is also possible on the go. Find a low carbohydrate muffin and then cook some egg whites, some low fat cheese and a piece of Canadian bacon. Then stack them together, wrap them in sheets of wax paper, and place them in a freezer bag. You’ll have a healthy breakfast you can grab on the go that won’t cost you that much.

On a lazy Sunday afternoon, you can also prepare some lunch bowls for the week. You can make a batch of brown rice and line the base of the bowl with it. Then add some steamed asparagus, broccoli, and top it with some sliced grilled chicken. Then wrap the bowl in some cellophane and stick it in the freezer. You can take a frozen meal to work that isn’t loaded in sodium and you’ll have some peace of mind knowing everything it contains. They will also make a great dinner if you prefer!

Another choice is to prepare some tuna salad sandwiches in advance. These sandwiches can be placed in the freezer and pulled out on the go. You can stick them in an ice chest or a cooler and by the time lunch rolls around, you’ll have a cool sandwich that is chock full of nutrients.

If you devote just a few hours each one day a week, you can prepare enough food to last you the remainder of the week. That will mean you don’t have to slave over a hot stove when you get home from work or the gym. Instead, you can put up your feet and heat up a delicious and healthy meal that you can feel good about eating.
