I’m going to tell you why New Years Resolutions suck and how to fix them ! A lot of New Years Resolution goals are based off of performance and appearance such as :
” I want to run more”
” I want to eat better”
” I want to lose weight”
– These goals only address the outer layer of personal development… our appearance or performance. This is like treating symptoms without addressing the actual underlying issue. To have the best chance at lasting success and behavior change dig deeper and ask who you are and who you want to be. Address your goals at the most basic level !
“Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity. What you do now is a mirror image of the type of person you believe that you are (either consciously or subconsciously).
To change your behavior for good, you need to start believing new things about yourself.”
Remember Deirdre ? The rebel who dropped 40lbs in 4 months? When she started out, she didn’t set grand goals and make rash decisions about what she was going to accomplish. She simply gave herself an identity change: “I am the type of person who makes healthy eating decisions and never misses a workout.”
Once you’ve identified who you want to be (your new identity), pick tiny goals to show that you CAN be that person.
What happened last week doesn’t matter, because that was the old you. The new you is who you want to be. Now here’s how to live it.
THERE’S TOO MANY OF THEM. When people set out to change their lives, they make a list that looks something like this:
Go to sleep earlier
Learn a language
Be a better husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/friend
– The body you’ve built and the life you lead is a result of years and years of habit building, both good and bad.
– Don’t overwhelm your body with new changes. Do less. To quote the all-knowing (and burned out) Kunu, “the less you do, the more you do.”
– Pick one or two things this month and work on them. As you learn these new habits, you’ll learn that other changes start to happen automatically. Momentum rules!
