Ketones

Regardless of your state, you body must continue to function. In other words, it will make usable energy out of another substance if one is depleted. Ketones are your second source of energy. When your glycogen storages are down and depleted, your body will begin converting fat into what are known as ketones. Ketones are created in the liver and then used to provide us energy, and fuel the heart and brain.

Diets such as the “Atkins Diet” and the “Ketogenic Diet” are based off this fat burning principle. What happens is that you deplete your muscles of glycogen and therefore you force your body to begin using fat for energy conversion. Eating a well balanced diet, where you do not over consume carbohydrates can create a similar effect and begin the process of fat loss.
