Catabolism vs. Anabolism

What’s the difference?

The direct definition of catabolism means your body is breaking down certain substances for energy use. Whereas with anabolism, you create new substances/molecules and store energy. When your body is in a catabolic state, your body has used up a good portion of its glycogen reservoirs and begins digging into your protein storages. This is not the state you want to be in because your body begins using protein storages in your muscles for energy. And as we all know, that is the last thing you want.

Anabolism is what we strive for – For a continual increase in macronutrients in your body, which will continually keep your body full. This is the huge reason as to why our in home personal training staff advocates meal frequency. After about three hours, your body goes into this catabolic state. It begins using protein storages for energy. You should eat meals every 2-3 hours for this reason. Eating too soon, may result in over eating and fat gain, whereas not eating for long periods of time will result in catabolism. The bigger problem is that once you are in this catabolic state for long enough, you become hungry; you end up overeating. Your body, because it thinks you will go for long periods of time without food, will store a greater majority of your meal as FAT. Unnecessary fat gain and weight gain come as a result.

New Jersey, eat your meals. Prepare them the night before so that you can stay in an anabolic state throughout the day. Not to say that you have to wake up in the middle of the night to eat; however, be prepared to make food and eat your small portions to stay in a muscle building state.
